Crown Lengthening Bremerton WA
What is Crown Lengthening?Your gums play an important role in the health of your mouth. They sit snugly against your teeth, providing a protective barrier to the roots of your teeth. They help to keep out harmful oral bacteria and other debris that can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and infections. Excess gum tissue causes your teeth to appear small, quickly diminishing the appearance of your smile. Crown lengthening is a procedure designed to remove this extra gum tissue (and in some cases, a small amount of bone), restoring a more natural, even gum line. It also helps to give your teeth a longer, more natural appearance.
How is a Crown Lengthening Done?A crown lengthening can usually be done under a local anesthetic. For patients who are nervous or anxious, sedation may be provided as well. The exact time it takes to perform a crown lengthening varies from patient to patient, dependent upon how many teeth need to be corrected and if bone needs to be removed as well. Even if only one tooth requires correction, the teeth on either side will also be worked on as well. This helps to ensure that the gum line stays natural.
After the local anesthetic is administered, we create small incisions in the gum tissue. These incisions enable us to remove the tissue from the teeth, as well as gain the access we need to the roots of your teeth and the surrounding bone. We carefully remove excess tissue and any necessary bone. When finished, we wash your gums with a sterile solution and suture the tissue back up against your teeth. Results are typically noticeable right away.
What Else Can a Crown Lengthening be Used For?While commonly used for aesthetic purposes, crown lengthening can be used for other dental reasons as well.
The placement of dental crowns. Dental crowns are common restorations for fixing damaged or compromised teeth. These caps are designed to cover the entire visible portion of your natural teeth. If you have excess gum tissue, the tissue can block the placement of a dental crown, which can lead to infections, further damage to the tooth, and even crown failure. Removing excess tissue enables proper placement.
Filling cavities. Cavities need to be cleaned and filled completely to restore the tooth and prevent further decay. A cavity at the gum line can prove tricky. Excess gum tissue may block our ability to completely clean or fill the cavity, which means that it can continue to worsen. By removing excess tissue, we can see the extent of the damage, clean the cavity completely, and fill it entirely.
Periodontal health. Excess gum tissue can easily trap and harbor oral bacteria. If these bacteria are not cleaned away, they continue to multiply. They also may irritate the gum tissue, increasing your risk for gum disease. Removing excess gum tissue means fewer places for bacteria to hide, and your gums are much easier to maintain.
