To maintain optimal oral health, the American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once daily. Along with your daily at home care, it is recommended that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least twice a year (once every six months). Despite this advice, many people do not follow these recommendations. They may not brush as often as recommended or attend regular dental visits. It is often believed that if you can’t see or feel anything wrong with your mouth, then everything is fine. Unfortunately, this is not always true. Many oral health issues are undetectable by you in their earliest stages. Neglecting your oral care can have serious consequences on your oral health, your smile, and even your overall health. At Pacific Ave. Dental we can help you to maintain optimal oral health with proper dental hygiene.
The Importance of Dental Hygiene
Dental hygiene is important for many reasons. Taking proper care of your mouth is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. In doing so, you ensure that they can perform their functions effectively. Strong, healthy teeth enable you to bite and chew your food, as well as speak properly. They help to maintain the strength and integrity of your jawbone. They also provide you with a beautiful smile. Healthy gums provide a protective seal around your teeth, protecting the roots, your periodontal ligaments, and your jawbone from harmful oral bacteria. By preventing bacteria from getting on your teeth and under the gum line, you prevent the risk of it entering your bloodstream. This prevents serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, digestive issues, intestinal failure, and preterm birth or low birthweight for pregnant women.
At Home Dental Care
Dental hygiene starts at home with a daily routine. It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day. You should brush for at least two minutes each time, using a soft bristled brush. The brush should be held at a 45-degree angle, and you should use soft, circular motions. Avoid brushing your teeth too hard, as this can scrub away enamel and cause gum recession.
Flossing should be done at least once a day. Use approximately 18 inches of floss. Wind it around your fingers, leaving a 2-inch space. Gently move the floss back and forth to work it between your teeth. Gently scrape up and down the sides of each tooth. Avoid forcing the floss or snapping it against your gums. Don’t forget to get the area behind your very back teeth.
Along with care at home, it is important to have regular professional cleanings and exams. Twice a year might not seem like much, but these visits are crucial. Professional cleanings allow us to remove any buildup that has accumulated on your teeth, especially in areas where you may miss. During your exams, we can take a close look at your teeth and oral tissues, checking for signs of problems. We can detect oral health issues in their earliest stages, enabling us to take action before they cause serious harm. In providing early treatment, we help to prevent the need for more invasive treatments later on.
