Top Reasons to Get a Dental Check-up Even without Pain

Posted on 9/23/2015 by Allan Hablutzel
A woman about to receive her dental checkup from her dentist. Many people think that they do not need to get a dental check-up if everything in their mouth feels just fine. Why fix something that is not broken, right? This line of thinking might be true for some things in life, but not your dental health. Just like you should have yearly physical health examinations to ensure that your body is in good health, the same is true for your mouth, with the exception that it should be twice a year in order for it to be the most beneficial.

Even if you think that you are doing just fine and there is nothing a dentist can do, there are reasons that a dental check-up is necessary.

Eliminate Bacteria

No matter how well you brush your teeth, you cannot get every little bit of bacteria out of your mouth. When we provide you with a professional cleaning, we are able to get the tightest nooks and crannies that may be harboring bacteria that you were not even aware of. This helps to decrease the risk of tooth decay and gum disease down the road. Just think of it as a second set of eyes having a look at your mouth to ensure its overall health.

Eliminate Tartar

If you have areas of your mouth that you have not properly cleaned and plaque has been left to build up, it will eventually turn into tartar. This substance can only be removed by our professionals as there is nothing you can do at home to eliminate it. When we scrape the enamel of your teeth, we are removing that tartar. Because this substance is responsible for gum disease and even heart disease if left too long, it is very important to have it removed from your mouth as often as possible.

Oral Cancer

Unfortunately, oral cancer does not show signs in its earliest stages. With a professional oral cancer screening, however, you can find out very early if you have cancerous cells in your mouth. This could potentially save your health and even your life. Rather than waiting until you have obvious lesions or issues in your mouth, keep up with your regular appointments so that you know early on if something needs to be done to treat the cancerous cells in your mouth.

Prevent Serious Issues

Not all dental health issues will cause pain right away. This means that you could have issues, such as gum disease, tooth decay, or other issues that are festering in your mouth but do not provide you with any signs just yet. When they do finally show signs, it could be because they are in their latest stages.

This means more invasive dental treatment and more time spent in the dental chair. Rather than subjecting yourself to invasive treatments, you could keep up with your regular appointments and catch any problems early on. For example, if you wait until your gums show signs of gum disease, you could be in the advanced stages of periodontitis. This illness is irreversible, which means you must find ways to deal with it and/or undergo invasive treatments. If you kept up with your regular appointments, however, we would catch this disease in its earliest stages and help you reverse it.

Your dental health is nothing to take for granted. A visit to our office twice a year can help you keep it in optimal health. Don't assume that just because your mouth feels fine that you are "in the clear." Instead, come see us twice a year so that we can partner with you to keep your mouth healthy.
