3 Signs that You Might Need a Root Canal

Posted on 11/15/2015 by Allan Hablutzel
An elderly woman receiving a root canal.Infections of the root canal are tricky problems to diagnose, because in some cases, you may not experience any symptoms. Unfortunately, these dental problems tend to be asymptomatic until they've reached advanced stages.

If at that point in time you experience any of these signs, you should be sure to contact your dentist immediately.

One Tooth Looks Darker than the Rest

While tooth discolorations are common, if you only have one tooth that has become discolored, you could have a deep infection. This will look different than a simple surface stain, as this tooth will appear to have darkened from the inside.

Your Tooth is Extremely Painful

If you are experiencing a toothache that is extremely painful, there is obviously some type of problem going on inside of the tooth. If your tooth is severely decayed, after the decay accesses the pulp, the pain will likely increase substantially given that the pulp is connected to the nerves. You may even lose sleep because of the severity of the pain.

Your Gums Look Swollen and Red

While red, swollen gums are often a sign of gum disease, they may also indicate an infection of the root canal. This inflammation is often isolated around a single tooth, but if the infection has spread into the gums the swelling could be widespread. If you are experiencing this symptom, you likely need to get into see your dentist right away.

The other main way to determine if you are in need of a root canal will be completed by your dentist, and that involves getting an X-ray. This diagnostic tool will show if there is an infection present internally, and it can be essential for treatment planning.

Therefore, if you suspect that you might be in need of a root canal, it is important to contact us to set up an appointment.
