How Coffee Drinkers Can Protect Their Teeth

Posted on 12/17/2015 by Allan Hablutzel
A cup of hot coffee. If you love your coffee, you've probably had your fair share of people tell you how bad it is for your teeth over the years. While coffee can certainly stain the teeth, there's no reason that you need to give up your beverage of choice entirely. There are several ways that you can enjoy your java while also protecting your teeth.

Alternate Between Coffee and Water
Switching off between coffee and water can help to keep your teeth clean, as it will wash away the tannic acid. This will also help your body to stay hydrated, as caffeine has a habit of drawing water out of the body. Drinking water will also help to avoid dry mouth.

Brush Your Teeth

Like other dark colored beverages, it is important to brush your teeth after you drink your cup of coffee. If you tend to drink a lot of coffee at work, keep an extra toothbrush tucked away in your desk drawer. If this isn't an option, carry a small bottle of mouthwash in your bag so that you can get rid of the acid and other debris that could be hiding out on and in between your teeth.

Use a Straw
While you may not want to use a straw when drinking a hot cup of coffee, a straw is a great way to drink iced coffees or lattes. A straw is a great way to limit how much of your teeth are exposed to the coffee, and this can go a long way in reducing stains.

It's never too late to start using these tips, but if you've been drinking coffee for years, you may have already experienced discoloration.

The best thing that you can do is to contact our office, as we can discuss teeth whitening and other services that can improve your smile.
