Treat - and Prevent - Tooth Erosion Today

Posted on 1/20/2016 by Allan Hablutzel
A woman's smile repaired with dental veneers.Tooth erosion - also referred to as dental or acid erosion - occurs when the pH of your mouth is too acidic. When this happens, the acidity could wear down or weaken the enamel of your tooth, which is the upper part of the tooth structure.

After this occurs, the tooth may reveal the lower dentin layer, causing sensitivity and a host of other problems. For that reason, treatment and prevention are essential and something that you need to take seriously.

How Can You Treat Tooth Erosion?

If you have suffered from tooth erosion, your dentist can discuss potential treatment options. Unfortunately, since the condition cannot be reversed and you can't regrow your enamel, these options will involve some type of restoration to improve the function and appearance of the teeth. Minor erosion that is mostly cosmetic may only require porcelain veneers or dental bonding to treat. More severe cases might require the use of a dental restoration like a crown, an inlay, or an onlay.

What Can You Do to Prevent Tooth Erosion?

The best thing that you can do for your teeth is to prevent erosion before it even starts. In order to prevent it, follow some of these helpful tips:

•  Brush with a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth, and make sure you are drinking fluoridated municipal water.
•  Use a straw when drinking any liquids that could be harmful to your teeth.
•  Minimize the amount of alcoholic drinks and sodas that you are consuming
•  Wait one hour or more after you eat foods with a high acid concentration in order to prevent enamel damage

In addition to these home care tips, you should also be sure that you are visiting with your dentist at least twice per year for deep cleanings and to have your teeth checked out. Call us today to set up your next appointment.
