What Are My Options for a Cracked Front Tooth?

Posted on 2/27/2016 by Allan Hablutzel
A woman covering her mouth with her hand because; she’s suffering from a chipped tooth! Sometimes, despite our best efforts to protect our teeth, an accident occurs. If the end result is a cracked front tooth, this can be especially distressing, as the damage will be front and center for everyone to see. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options that your dentist can use to fix the problem and restore your smile.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

After trauma to the teeth, your dentist will need to determine the extent of the damage. If it is found that the crack extends down into the pulp, it is quite likely that you will need a root canal to treat the inflammation and to save the tooth. A crown will then be placed on top to cover and protect it.

What Can Be Done to Fix the Tooth if a Root Canal Isn't Needed?

There are several treatment options available to correct your cracked tooth:

•  Crowns. Even if a root canal isn't needed, a crown might be a viable option for your tooth. These porcelain caps are the perfect cover for a damaged tooth and can be created to match the shape and color of the rest of your teeth.
•  Dental bonding. Bonding uses composite resin to seal and fill in a crack. It can also be placed over the surface of your tooth and reshaped in order to minimize the appearance of the problem.
•  Dental implant. If the damage is severe and the tooth cannot be saved, a dental implant is a permanent tooth loss solution. It involves placement of a metal rod into the jaw where it will fuse to the bone. Then it is topped with a false tooth.

If you experience a cracked front tooth your first step should be to contact our office. You can then discuss the pros and cons of each treatment option.
