What Can You Do about Your Burning Mouth?

A close up of a patients mouth suffering from a burning sensation.Do you suffer from a burning sensation in your mouth that doesn't seem to go away? If so, you could be living with a condition called burning mouth syndrome, and unfortunately, this problem isn't well understood by doctors.

Initially, doctors thought that it might be the result of a mental illness, and while researchers do believe that anxiety and depression can contribute to the development, it is now thought that the problem is actually a result of living with chronic pain.

How Do You Know if You Have Burning Mouth Syndrome?

There are some common symptoms that might indicate you have burning mouth syndrome. A scalding sensation that affects your lips, tongue, or inside of your mouth is the most common issue, and it often begins in the late morning and builds throughout the day. Dry mouth, a metallic taste, and numbness in the mouth are other common symptoms.

How is Burning Mouth Syndrome Treated?

If you are experiencing what you suspect is burning mouth syndrome, it is important that you make an appointment with your dentist.

He can examine your mouth to try and find the underlying cause of the problem, as this will be important to determine what treatment is going to work best. Some of the most common treatment options include:

•  Changing your medications, especially if you are taking medication drugs
•  Replacing or fixing your dentures
•  Taking anti-fungal medications or vitamin supplements
•  Using a mouth rinse that contains capsaicin
•  Going through hormone therapy

There are other remedies that might also provide you some relief, including sipping on water, sucking on ice chips, avoiding trigger food, chewing sugarless gum, and brushing your teeth with baking soda instead of toothpaste.
