It's not a big secret that brushing and flossing regularly is necessary to keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy. Sometimes we just need a little bit of a reminder to stick to a regular schedule and carry on fighting the good fight against tooth decay. The Obvious IssuesEveryone knows that if you don't brush and floss you will probably get some cavities. Everyone is different in this respect. Some people can ignore their mouth almost completely and still come away from a regular cleaning and exam with a clean bill of health.Others can brush and floss two times a day, every day and still get cavities. Either way, no argument can be made against good oral hygiene habits. So we know what the obvious issues are with not brushing and flossing but what are some of the things that happen that most people don't realize is possible? The Hidden DangersThe real risk you face when you forget to take care of your mouth for too long is the risk of gum disease. When the gums get infected by the same bacteria that causes cavities there can be a bunch of nasty consequences. The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and is usually marked by gums that bleed easily or often. Gingivitis can seriously weaken the gums that support your teeth both physically and from bacterial infection. This early stage gum disease can be recovered from, but if not taken care of can progress into a more serious condition known as periodontal disease.
