How Often Should You Be Brushing Your Tongue?

It has become more commonly accepted that along with brushing and flossing, you should also be using mouthwash and brushing your tongue. However, do you know how often this should be happening? Dentists tell us that brushing needs to happen twice per day.

They also tell us that flossing needs to happen at least once per day. Brushing the tongue has a lot to do with ridding the tongue of the bacteria that you don't want in your mouth. This helps to determine how often you need to do it.

Brushing Your Tongue Needs to Be Part of Your Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

For most people, brushing the tongue once per day is plenty. They can brush, get it clean, and go on about their day without as much risk of halitosis or increased risks of tooth decay.

However, if you tend to eat foods that increase the growth of bad bacteria in the mouth, such as starch and sugar, you should opt to brush your tongue at least twice per day.

You want to get a good tongue cleaner for this process. You should make sure to scrape the surface of the tongue where the taste buds have taken up residence. However, you also want to get the sides and underside of the tongue as well during this process. The more bad bacteria you can scrape off your tongue, the healthier your mouth will be. You will likely also find that when you keep your tongue clean, you end up with less bad breath.

If you want help determining how often to brush your tongue, seek out the advice of your dentist. He or she can tell you the current condition of your tongue, and what it is going to take to get your tongue back to being the safe haven for good bacteria.
