Does Sparkling Water Hurt Your Mouth?

Posted on 2/23/2017 by Allan Hablutzel
Two bottles of sparkling water beside each other.
The debate over how safe sparkling water is for your mouth is not over yet. Some believe that it is good since you are getting water, while others believe that it is dangerous because of the acids that are in the water.

The truth is, sparkling waters can be both good and bad for you, but when had in moderation, or as a replacement for something more acidic, it can be better for your mouth than the alternatives.

Understanding Sparkling Water

Sparkling water is acidic. It can add to any type of erosion that is already happening in your mouth. However, if you are cutting out sports drinks or soda out of your diet, switching to sparkling water can be beneficial. It is giving your mouth a form of water, which for people that tend to not drink enough water, it can be a good thing. However, if you have the option of drinking regular tap water instead, you should opt for it.

Tap water is really good for you. On top of keeping you hydrated, it also keeps your mouth cleaner than other things you could drink. When you drink tap water, you also get fluoride, which allows your body to fight off tooth decay more effectively.

If you have the choice between sparkling water and regular water, you need to opt for regular water. The less acid you can put in your mouth, the better. However, if you recently downgraded your acid to sparkling water from something worse, make sure you go in and speak with your dentist as soon as humanly possible.

They can look at your teeth and see how much damage the acid has already done to your teeth. Then, repairs can be made, and your new beverage options can help to benefit your teeth from there on out.
