How Tea Can Boost the Health of Your Mouth

Green tea is rich in antioxidants, which are shown to have amazing health benefits. It increases metabolism, regulates blood sugars, and reduces bad cholesterol. Green tea also contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds. Did you know that green tea can also be beneficial for your oral health as well?

Prevents Cavities

Because of green tea's antibacterial properties, it helps to fight against cavity causing oral bacteria. It can lower the acidity of plaque on your teeth, which could otherwise weaken your enamel. It could also help neutralize the acids produced by bacteria that cause the cavities in the first place.

Fights Gum Disease

Again, green tea's antibacterial properties help to kill harmful oral bacteria, which can attack sensitive gum tissues and lead to gum disease. When bacteria do attack, your gums become inflamed, which starts the process of gingivitis. Green tea's anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent this from happening. It may also lessen the inflammation caused by bacteria before you started drinking green tea.

Better Breath

Oral bacteria do not only attack your gums and produce acids that destroy your teeth, they also cause bad breath. Bad breath can also be caused by certain foods, such as garlic and onions. Green tea not only kills odor causing bacteria, it is high in polyphenols, which break down sulfur compounds (which are found in large amounts in foods like garlic and onions).

Helps in the Fight Against Oral Cancer

Oral cancer, or cancer of the mouth, is a fatal cancer when not found and treated early on. The antioxidants found in green tea can help in the fight against it by slowing the cancer's progression. Their properties are known to protect against cell damage as well as cancerous tumor growth.

Green tea can greatly help to keep your mouth clean and healthy. But it should not be used to replace your oral healthcare regimen. Brushing and flossing regularly should still be an essential part of your day.
