What to Do When Veneers Get Damaged

Posted on 6/20/2017 by Allan Hablutzel
A woman happy with her new dental veneers.
Veneers are great options when you have minor imperfections on your teeth that need to get covered up, but they are also brittle. They need to be used carefully in order to not chip or break.

If you happen to notice that your veneer either falls off, or you have found a portion of the veneer in your mouth, then you need to go in and see your dentist to see what can be done.

The Things Your Dentist is Going to Look At

If you found a large piece of veneer, it is possible that your entire veneer fell off of your tooth. That's a good reason to make sure to keep the parts you find and bring them to your dentist's office.

Just make sure you store them carefully until you get there, like in a box or medicine bottle, wrapped in paper towel or a tissue. Your dentist is going to look and see if the entire veneer came off, or if part of it broke.

If it is broken, you will likely need to order a new one. However, if it fell off, then there is a chance that it could be reattached. This will only be able to be determined by your dentist during an exam.

Since many veneers are placed without temporary ones put in place during the time it takes to get the veneer made by the lab, you shouldn't notice any significant pain or discomfort during the time it takes to get seen.

However, your teeth may be a little more sensitive. Just eat carefully, and if you notice pain, cover the tooth with a bit of dental wax until you go in. Then, your dentist can decide how to best protect your tooth until a new veneer can be put on.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about dental veneers.
