How To Tell When Your Filling Needs To Be Replaced

There are a lot of people who have had at least one filling in their lives in order to block up a cavity. Ideally, fillings should last for a very long time. Usually they should be able to last for a good few years, although eventually all fillings are going to have to be replaced.

The way in which people use their teeth (drinking, chewing and one of the biggest culprits: tooth grinding) are all going to eventually take their toll on the enamel and the filling.

What Causes a Filling to Loosen?

The answer to this is the same reason that your tooth got a cavity in the first place: decay. Bacteria cause teeth to decay, and this is probably what is happening around the filling when it starts to loosen and eventually fall out.

There are other factors as well, such as patients having fillings of lower quality to begin with (which is why you should never skimp on the quality of your treatment). Usually there is a seal between the filling and the tooth, but this seal can end up breaking down and letting bacteria in. The bacteria can be very difficult to remove, even with a toothbrush.

How Can I Tell If a Filling Needs Replacing?

This is a bit of a tricky one. Feeling sharp pains in the filled tooth is a good indicator, but some people will actually feel the dental filling starting to loosen. Often, sharp pains will occur when you eat something very hot or very cold.

The degree of your tooth sensitivity and how often it happens are important indicators that something is wrong. Of course, probably one of the best ways to find out it is to come and see us. This way, we will be able to provide you with further treatment for your dental filling.
