Stained Teeth Pacific Ave. Dental WA 98337-1900There are several kinds of mediation that can cause discoloration in your teeth, and there are also some foods and drinks that can cause it as well. We will also be listing the types of food that discolors your teeth.

Medications That Can Discolor Your Teeth

•  Tetracycline and Doxycycline are antibiotics that are known to discolor teeth. Especially in children if their teeth are still developing before the age of 8.
•  Any type of mouthwash or rinses that contains Chlorhexidine or Cetylpyridinium chloride can stain your teeth.
•  Antihistamines like Benadryl, medications for antipsychotic reasons, and high blood pressure medications can also cause your teeth to be discolored.

Foods and Drinks That Can Change the Color of Your Teeth

•  Black Tea-contains a lot of natural compounds that is called Tannins. Tannins stick to your teeth because they love the protein that is in enamel on your teeth. Coffee contains tannins too, just not as much.
•  Soda, Energy, and Sports Drinks-Any sodas, energy drinks or any kind of sports drinks can stain your teeth. Especially sodas like, Mountain Dew, Coke, or Pepsi, anything that has a lot of acid is bad for your teeth. Acid will eat away at the enamel on your teeth and cause them to decay.
•  Berries- contain chromogens. They are pigments that will stick to your teeth. If you eat a big slice of cherry pie, blackberry pie, blueberry pie, any kind of berries can leave a stain on your teeth.
•  Fruits-like blueberries, blackberries, grapes, as well as fruit juice, anything like this can stain your teeth.

You can make a few simple changes in your everyday life that you can prevent your teeth from discoloration. Drink less coffee, tea and soda or quit all together. You can also try to practice better dental hygiene by, brushing more, flossing more, and using a mouthwash every day, and also getting your teeth cleaned by us.
