Dental Implants FAQ

Diagram of Dental Implant from Pacific Ave. Dental in Bremerton, WALosing your teeth, no matter if you lose one or many, is a serious issue. Tooth loss affects your abilities to bite and chew. It affects your ability to speak. It also impacts the quality of your smile. Additionally, tooth loss causes bone loss in your jaw, which can then cause your healthy teeth to begin to shift out of alignment. When faced with tooth loss, it is important that they are replaced as soon as possible. At Pacific Ave. Dental, we can replace your missing teeth with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the latest addition to the options available for replacing missing teeth. This unique treatment involves a surgical procedure during which small titanium rods are inserted directly into your jawbone. The posts rely on a process called osseointegration, or the fusion of your bone to the titanium. This process stabilizes the posts in your
jaw, making it possible for them to securely support your replacement teeth.

What Types of Dental Implants Are Available?

Dental implants are very versatile and can be used whether you are missing just one tooth or you are missing all of your teeth. There are several different types of dental implants to meet a variety of needs:
•  Single tooth. A single tooth implant involves the use of one post to support one crown, replacing a single tooth anywhere in your mouth.
•  Multiple teeth. Commonly called an implant supported bridge, one or more posts are used to support two or more consecutive replacement teeth.
•  Full arch replacement. Often called an implant supported denture, this type of restoration uses six to eight posts to support an entire arch of new teeth.
•  The All-on-4®
•  Treatment Concept. If you have lost too much bone mass to successfully support the six to eight posts needed for an implant supported denture, the All-on-4 provides you with a way to get a full arch replacement without the need for a bone graft first. This treatment uses only four posts to support your teeth. These posts are placed in such a way so that they can take full advantage of the bone mass you do have.

How Does the Dental Implant Procedure Work?

Unlike traditional tooth replacements, dental implants require a surgical procedure. After a local anesthetic and sedation, small incisions are made in the gums so that we have to access your jawbone. Following your treatment plan, we drill holes into your jaw and insert the titanium posts. The gums are then stitched closed around the posts, leaving a small portion exposed. Before you leave, you are provided with temporary teeth to use while you heal.
The amount of time that it takes you to heal following surgery varies on several factors. On average, it can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. During this time, your jawbone fuses to the posts, integrating them into your jaw. Several follow-up visits ensure that you are healing properly and that there are no complications. Once you have fully healed, we can then begin the process of placing your final crowns.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are a multitude of benefits associated with dental implants. Such benefits include:
•  The restoration of your abilities to eat and speak properly.
•  Improved digestion and overall nutrition.
•  Your smile is restored, which can give you a major boost of confidence.
•  Your teeth are comfortable. They are supported by the posts rather than your gums or adjacent teeth.
•  Your replacement teeth can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
•  The titanium posts restore stimulation to your jawbone. This helps to stop, and prevent, bone loss in your jaw, enabling it to remain strong and healthy.
